Caroll H. Spriggs II was sworn in as Maryland’s new state fire marshal Sept. 28 in the Chesapeake Hearing Room at the Calvert County Administration Building in Prince Frederick.

Spriggs served with the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department in Calvert County for 38 years. He is the first African American to serve as Maryland state fire marshal in the department’s 132-year history. He was appointed to the position Sept. 16.
